The Culture War:
A Report from the Mess Tent

I keep hearing about the culture war being fought right here in the U.S.
Today, it became very real to me.

I pride myself in making a fine vegetarian chili from a recipe I've been perfecting over the past few Arkansas winters. I'll spare you the details (fresh cilantro, etc.), but I begin with a secret I learned from my mom: Bear Creek's "Damn Good Chili" mix.

This year, our friends at Bear Creek have renamed said package "Darn Good Chili." Look, if my mom wasn't too offended to buy the original, I can't imagine it hurt their sales that much.

I like to imagine that James Dobson was involved in the name change.

I was shopping with mom the other day and we saw the "Darn Good Chili" and we were both disappointed. The name is the reason I bought it the first time I saw it and then I kept buying it because it's so "darn" good. I'm tempted to not buy it anymore....not just because of the name change....but because of its after effects....(if you know what I mean).

harbs, i suspect your NM roots would have you leaning towards green chili most of the time anyway, no?

Actually, I don't think Dr. Dobson had anything to do with it. I e-mailed the company a few years ago about them using a cuss word in the name of their product, and they changed it shortly after that.

I must agree with many of the posts... I originally purchased it based on the name "damned good chili." Anybody that could make that claim right out there in the public eye deserved a try and my wife and I have been hooked ever since. Then one day we were walking the soup isle and low and behold I said "I'll be DAMNED" they have conformed to political correctness! I almost didn't buy it, but alas... regardless of what they call it... it will always be "Damned GOOD Chili," especially in a hurry!
